As friends and families of victims of rape suffer, I will share with you the painful moments of a young girl who escaped from a rapist, leaving with physical injuries on her body.
Raping case has been with us since immemorial and although we have laws that prohibit such act, many innocent victims are suffering, with the security doing less to the corridor of justice.
In the African settings, women are seen as object of pleasure and their “expected” duty remain in the kitchen.
The worst cases are reported where the victims see their attackers walking majestically and instances, they are threatened never to report to authority, unless they want to be killed.
This is the true story of a young, beautiful and ambitious girl who escaped from the wrath of a man who tried all possible means to rape and injured her physically, leaving permanent scar on her body and soul. Remembering her worst memorable moment of her life, she says,
“It was 2012 i had gone to see my boyfriend at Ushirika estate past Juja rd estate Eastleigh, around evening hours. Some dark skinned short chubby guy about my age approached me & was all smiles & friendly like,"mambo Sweetie (how are you sweety).Hassan amesema nikushow umngojee kwa grao coz sai ako hapa ndani mosque & watu wakitoka swala itakuwa mezesha kwake kuonekana na wewe publicly vile hauna buibui coz of the sheikhs in there & his neighbors too, (Hassan said you should wait for him in the playground since he is in the mosque now and by the time prayer ends, he will come out).”
With the confident he approached her, she was convinced that the man meant no harm and followed him without a second thought of their destination. She continues,
“I innocently followed the guy into the football ground to wait for my Hassan on a bench there just behind that primary school.Wacha anipigeh sweep nidunde chini ya mti.Wacha aanze kuni strip top & strangling my neck. I couldn't be heard screaming coz of the loud muadhin of the mosque!
“I couldn't run coz he put me in a head lock! In short he was so immoral & daring not to mention shameless trying to rape me right behind the holy mosque where people were busy praying to God & kwanza in a very open playing ground. Hakuna mtu hapo coz ilikuwa evening & my screams were being drowned by the loud speaker muaadhin(call for prayers)!!! That's how brutal a rapist can be! Hata haogopi mosque wala Mungu wala hana aibu! Haogopi chochote! Hana haya yoyote!
Moment of struggle.
As she tried to free herself from the rapist, she shouted loudly for any help but all her efforts bore negative fruits.
“Wah wacha tu'nga ng'aneh with that monster of a boy was so scared screaming, biting, scratching him, he forcefully lay on top of me with all his chubby weight na kitambi yake yote (YUCK!) Sweating and kuhema all over me, he quickly took off his trouser & boxers & his ugly d*c & started forcefully pulling my trousers down. I refused with all my might & little strength that i had left.
He started slapping me around continously akini nyonga (strangling her).I started kicking in the air like a mad woman & feeling abit dizzy & chocked coz of vile alikuwa anani nyonga sana na mkono zake nono.Sauti yangu saa iyo imeiisha yote i can't even scream anymore!"
The man was heavier than her and this gave her helpless moments to defense herself. She says she was getting weaker and blood began oozing from her face, due to the scars he created while forcibly slapping her endlessly. She explains,
“I was getting weaker & weaker. I could smell blood on my face but at that moment i didn't care kama nime-uumia or where exactly the blood was coming from.Sikuwa najali kama ni nose bleed ama ameni gwara uso ama nime gongwa kichwa.I just didn't care, just wanted to fight that bastard off me!
I knew i was blacking out any minute now & would be unconcious any minute.I could feel my body was exhausted of fighting & was letting up & giving up on me but my mind was still fighting him hard so i prayed to Jesus not to let me faint coz ninge faint hapo, that bastard would easily rape me unconscious!”
Dizziness overtook her.
The only things, she could was to pray for her safety. She narrates her story.
“When my eyes started seeing split images & my head got too dizzy. i told Jesus to give me just 5 more minutes to fight, “I just need 5 more minutes of strength my dear God. Just 5 minutes. I don't want to black out here God. Please don't allow me to black out now" with hot tears & blood streaming down my cheek."
Prayer accepted.
In all this while, Lisa struggled to overcome the devil who tried to ruin her life, nobody was emerged to offer helping hand. As she prayed, her agony was heard from above and within seconds, some Chokoras (street urchins) emerged from nowhere and pursued the criminal.
“Before the bastard could fully take down my trousers & pantie, some chokoras came from nowhere, saw us & started running towards us throwing stones at him. They started shouting "SHIKA HUYO! SHIKA HUYO" The fat coward got scared, got up left his trouser & started running away from them in his boxers. The chokoras started chasing him & throwing things at him. Somehow he managed to escape from them by climbing iyo wall ya chuo & jumping to side ya race course estate.
Helping hand at last.
After chasing the criminal, they gave her water to wash the blood from her face and helped her with jacket to cover her body.
“Then the chokosh boys came with clean water from iyo car wash apo nyuma ya chuo & told me to wash the blood off my face, they covered my torn top with their jacket coz my boobs were all out & carried me to the mosque. They were like,"madam uko sawa? Aki pole madam" i was so shaken!”
The story spread to all corners.
Just after the prayer, everybody in the vicinity heard the astonishing of the attempted rape and arrived to look for the man who tried such heinous act.
“The head sheikh there heard the whole story from me & those chokosh boys identified the bastard! Immediately sheikh made a loud speaker announcement at the mosque that vijana wote waiislamu watoke waendee race course estate kumsaka yule muhalifu aliyetoroka.Less than an hour later, the Muslim boys came back with the bastard naked on a mkokoteni.”
Frog matched to the police station
“Then the ustaadhs ordered he face me & apologize in front of the whole crowd & that he be frog marched naked to Pangani Police station for all to see him. He was crying for mercy like a kid!!!
Those boys in Kanzu did not spare him either. They went singing, kicking him & spitting on him. My boyfriend did not even wanna see the bastard.I had never seen my boyfriend cry before! He was one of those tough macho guys so seeing him furious & eyes all red like that & tears surprised me a lot!”
Her final say on the fateful incident.
Revealing how she escaped from the pain of rape, she urges all other victims of rape to speak up, lest people come to know and enhance helping hand.
On the same note, many victims of rape keep silent in a bid to avoid societal stigma and instead suffer silently. She says,
“I URGE ALL RAPE VICTIMS AND ATTEMPTED RAPE TO SPEAK UP. Those sheikhs counselled me & told me it is not something to be embarrased about coz it was not my fault at all.He was just a bad evil person who did not fear God.So speak up ladies! Usiogope kuenda ku-report mtu.Hakuna haya yoyote! JUST REPORT! TELL SOMEONE,parent, friend, pastor, sheikh, neighbor,ur bro,ur siz.DO NOT SUFFER ALONE! TALK!”
Not only her case reported but a civil rights nonprofit organization, Rural Education and Economics Enhancement Program (REEP) documented more than 8,000 cases of sexual violence against minors in the county of Busia.
On Monday 13th April, three men were sentenced to 15 years in jail for raping 16 year old girl in Busia County.
The minor was beaten and repeatedly raped, thrown into pit latrine. 2 years ago, the girl suffered in the hands of rapists, her back got injuries to the extent that she needed to use wheelchair to move around.
She then developed obstetric fistula, injury to the wall of her vagina that left her in such worse condition in her tender age.
In the past two years, her situation gathered more than 2 million signatures demanding the police to take serious action and provide justice for the girl.
In the online platform, the hash tag #JusticeForLiz trended to spread the news for the sentences of the criminals.
